Chairman Moon Joo-hyun of MDM Group Donates KRW 470 Million to Development Fund
Sookmyung Women’s University has dedicated a new lecture hall named after Moon Joo-hyun, chairman of MDM Group, a leading comprehensive real estate and financial group in Korea. Chairman Moon, who also heads the Moon-Ju Scholarship Foundation, pledged a donation of KRW 470 million in support of the university’s vision as it approaches its 120th anniversary. In recognition of his contribution, Room 203 in the Prime Building—overlooking a sweeping view of the campus—was named the “Moon Joo-hyun Lecture Hall.” A first-generation real estate developer, Chairman Moon founded his company in 1998 in a modest single-room studio with a monthly rent of KRW 200,000. Since then, he has built MDM Group into an enterprise with assets totaling approximately KRW 8 trillion, placing it 63rd among Korea’s top conglomerates. MDM Group has since evolved into a comprehensive real estate finance group, comprising 15 affiliates, including MDM, MDM Plus, Korea Asset In Trust (KAIT), and MDM Asset Management (MDMAM). Sookmyung Women’s University plans to use the donated funds to provide KRW 400 million in scholarships for its Global Exploration Program and KRW 70 million in research support for the Asian Women’s Research Institute. These efforts aim to nurture globally competent talent and advance women’s research. Chairman Moon stated, “I created the scholarship foundation to fulfill a personal promise—to give back a portion of my earnings to the next generation. I’m truly grateful to Sookmyung Women’s University for this meaningful opportunity and for naming such a beautiful lecture hall in my honor.” Having entered university at the age of 27 with the help of a scholarship foundation, Moon recalled those challenging early years as the inspiration for establishing the Moon-Ju Scholarship Foundation in 2001. Since its establishment, the foundation has awarded scholarships to over 6,000 students, serving as a reliable pillar of support within Korean society. The naming ceremony, held on Friday, May 9, was attended by key leaders from MDM Group’s affiliates, including Kim Kyu-cheol, Vice Chairman of KAIT; Shin Chan-hyuk, CEO of KAIT; Cho Hyun-bin, Executive Director of KAIT; Koo Myung-wan, CEO of MDM Plus; Moon Hyun-jung, Executive Director of MDM Plus; and Moon Tae-hyun, CEO of MDM. Representing the university were President Moon Si-yeon, Vice President Wi Kyeong-woo, and other senior administrators, who expressed their heartfelt gratitude. Following the plaque presentation and signage unveiling, Planning Director Kim Cheol-yeon introduced the university’s long-term development plan. A surprise birthday celebration was also held for Chairman Moon, adding a heartwarming touch to the event. President Moon Si-yeon remarked, “Both MDM Group and Sookmyung Women’s University are committed to identifying and nurturing future value—whether in real estate or students. Chairman Moon’s support empowers our students to gain global experience and grow into the next generation of leaders.”
