On May 19, in celebration of ‘Coming-of-Age Day’, our university campus was adorned with the elegance of traditional hanbok and the fragrance of beautiful roses.
The university’s Student Support Center hosted a one-day event titled "Celebrating Song-i’s 20th Birthday" in honor of ‘Coming-of-Age Day’ and ‘Hanbok Day’. A photo zone was set up in front of Sunheon Building where students could rent traditional hanbok and take commemorative photos. Students selected hanbok in their preferred colors and designs, strolling across campus and enjoying a festive day.
President Moon Si-yeun and Dean of Student Affairs Jung Hye-young also participated in hanbok, handing out roses to students. Lim Ji-yoo (Class of ’25, Division of Interdisciplinary Studies) shared, “Taking part in the ‘Coming-of-Age Day’ event in the year I turned 20 makes me feel like I’ve truly become a grown-up. It’s a whole new feeling.”
In the afternoon, the "A Gift for Myself on Coming-of-Age Day" program was held at the Lee Sambong Lounge in the Centennial Hall. Around 40 participants, including international students from the Division of Global Convergence, took part in the event, writing messages to one another in calligraphy and making their own flower bouquets.
Woo Mi-jin (Class of ’25, Department of Orchestral Music), who wore a traditional warrior costume, shared, “At first I felt a little embarrassed, but once I put it on, it was fun and I felt closer to my friends.” She added, “Thanks to this event, I was able to understand the meaning of ‘Coming-of-Age Day’ and celebrate a precious day that’s just for me.”
President Moon Si-yeun stated, “Becoming a grown-up marks the beginning of a journey in which one takes responsibility for their own choices and lives as a mature citizen who respects others and society.” She added, “Sookmyung will always be by your side on that journey, serving as a strong and steady support.”
Meanwhile, the College of Science Student Council also held a separate event at Snowflake Square, where they handed out flowers they had prepared. Kim Min-ji, President of the College of Science Student Council, said, “We prepared fresh flowers to congratulate students coming of age, and students’ response has been very positive.”
