Sookmyung Women’s University has further expanded its global cooperation network by signing a series of exchange agreements with prestigious universities in Hungary. Through these partnerships, the university plans to promote a range of international programs, including student exchanges and academic collaboration.
On Monday, September 22, President Moon Si-yeun officially visited two of Hungary’s top institutions—the University of Pécs, located in the southern cultural hub of Pécs, and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in the capital city of Budapest—to sign bilateral cooperation agreements.
At the University of Pécs, President Moon met with Vice President Zoltan Schepp to discuss directions for education, research, and international collaboration. During the subsequent signing ceremony, both universities formally concluded an academic and student exchange agreement and agreed to develop specific cooperative programs. President Moon also visited the university’s Medical School to explore potential partnerships in medicine and public health.
Founded in 1367, the University of Pécs is one of Hungary’s oldest universities, with approximately 28,000 students. The institution offers a balanced education and research environment across the humanities, sciences, medicine, and arts. It ranks within the 741–750 range in the QS World University Rankings 2026, and is recognized as one of Hungary’s top institutions for its international student ratio and quality of learning experience. The partnership is expected to provide Sookmyung students with diverse educational opportunities and access to global networks.
President Moon also visited the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, where she met with Vice President Gyula Fekete to discuss cooperation in music education and the development of joint programs. During the MOU signing ceremony, the two institutions agreed to collaborate in various areas, including student and faculty exchanges, joint research, and cultural program development.
The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, founded in 1875 by Hungary’s legendary composer Franz Liszt, is one of Europe’s foremost institutions for music education. It ranks 12th globally in music education and 24th in performing arts according to the QS World University Rankings 2025, and is renowned for its world-class performance facilities and extensive international network in the arts.
This visit laid the groundwork for practical and sustainable collaboration between Sookmyung Women’s University and Hungarian higher education institutions. In fact, earlier this summer, three students from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Hungary participated in Sookmyung’s Summer School Program, studying Korean language and culture and deepening academic exchange. Hungarian university representatives also expressed keen interest in Sookmyung’s upcoming International College of K-Culture, exploring possibilities for cooperation in cultural and artistic fields.
This series of collaborations was made possible through the efforts of Ambassador Hong Kyu-dok, former Korean Ambassador to Hungary and Honorary Professor at Sookmyung Women’s University, who served as a bridge between the institutions. Drawing on his extensive experience in education and diplomacy, Ambassador Hong played a pivotal role in fostering inter-university collaboration.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, September 20, President Moon met with four Sookmyung students currently studying abroad at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest. She encouraged them, saying, “The challenges and achievements you encounter abroad will not only foster your personal growth but also serve as a driving force for our university’s global engagement. I hope you continue to seek out diverse opportunities and experiences on the international stage.”
