During an official visit to the United States, Sookmyung Women's University President Si-yeun Moon met with Dr. K. Philip Hwang, a longtime supporter of the university's new Grand Auditorium, to share the project's progress and secured an additional $500,000 in support. The gift strengthens the financial foundation for the project and will help accelerate its development.
On July 29, President Moon visited Dr. Hwang's office to brief him on the preparations, progress, and future plans for the new Grand Auditorium and to exchange views on the project's direction. She was joined by Hyung-jin Lee, Dean of External Affairs & Communication; Woon-a Song, Director of the Fundraising & Development Team.
"I had been wondering how the new Grand Auditorium was coming along, so it means a great deal to have you come and explain it in person," Dr. Hwang said, welcoming the president and her delegation.

Dr. Hwang has pledged $6 million toward the construction of Sookmyung's new Grand Auditorium, of which he has already contributed $2 million. Having continued to follow the project closely, he decided at this meeting to provide $500,000 of his remaining pledge in advance, in support of the university's commitment to moving the project forward.
The decision once again reflects Dr. Hwang's firm support for the project and his deep interest in the university's advancement, and it is expected to give strong momentum to the work ahead.

Meanwhile, on August 1, Dr. Hwang took part in a gathering of young Silicon Valley alumni leaders held in Palo Alto, California, where he connected with graduates working at global companies. As a first-generation Silicon Valley entrepreneur who built a classic success story, he shared his experience in founding a company, his entrepreneurial spirit, and the lessons he learned in blazing new trails.
Alumni at the gathering shared experiences from their respective fields—including IT, semiconductors, finance, biotechnology, and healthcare—and exchanged ideas on cultivating global talent and strengthening the overseas alumni network. Introducing his autobiography, There Is No Trial You Cannot Overcome, Dr. Hwang offered advice across generations and encouraged Sookmyung alumnae to take on the world stage in Silicon Valley and beyond with greater confidence.
"Dr. Hwang's spirit of challenge and his achievements, together with his unwavering interest in and support for Sookmyung's future, serve as a great example to younger Sookmyung alumnae," President Moon said. "We will continue to expand opportunities for communication and collaboration among our global alumni, so that the experience and wisdom of senior graduates can be passed on to the next generation."
